16 Tamil Nadu Districts Face Heavy Rainfall Alert Till October 19

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert for Tamil Nadu, predicting widespread heavy rainfall continuing through October 19. The forecast is driven by a low-pressure system forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal, enhanced by strong easterly winds. A total of 16 districts are on high alert, with expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday. Key districts under this alert include Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, and Tenkasi, with numerous others like Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Madurai, and Tiruvannamalai also likely to experience intense showers. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in several coastal and delta districts. The hilly regions of Tirunelveli and coastal areas like Kanniyakumari are under watch for heavy downpours around mid-October. Chennai can expect moderate rain and thunderstorms, with a warning issued for possible waterlogging in low-lying areas. The state has already witnessed the impact of recent heavy rains, including flash floods and infrastructure damage in western districts, and increased water levels in reservoirs leading to dam releases. Landslide warnings have been issued for the Nilgiris district, prompting temporary road closures and advisories for residents in hazardous zones. State authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have disaster response teams on standby to manage any emergencies.
