Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice which has its roots in India. The International Yoga Day aims to raise awareness about the many benefits of practicing art around the world. This day has been celebrated since 21 June 2015.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 2014 address to the United Nations General Assembly proposed that one day should be recognized globally for celebrating and practicing yoga.
In his address, Modi said that yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient traditions. Yoga symbolizes the totality of unity of mind and body, thought and action.
He said that yoga is not just an exercise, it is a way of discovering a sense of unity with oneself, the world and nature.
So elected June 21
PM Modi chose the day of June 21 to celebrate yoga as it forms the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and is the longest day of the year.
For the first time, on Yoga Day, Modi and dignitaries from 84 countries performed 21 asanas for 35 minutes at Rajpath in New Delhi.
Made two records
Day saw the task of making two records. One was for the largest yoga class ever and the second most countries participated.
