Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Sri Lanka People’s Party (SLPP) appears to be getting a majority in the early trends in the counting of Colombo Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections. After which Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Mahinda Rajapaksa and congratulated him on the victory. Five results have been announced so far from the Sinhalese dominated south region. Of these, SLPP got more than 60 percent votes.

Sri Lanka’s newest party, the closest rival to the Sri Lanka People’s Party, is a new party founded by Sajith Premadasa. Premadasa has split from its parent party United National Party (UNP) and formed a new party. The UNP is ranked fourth according to the election results.
Official results show that Marxist Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has also performed better than UNP. In the Tamil-dominated north region, the main Tamil party has won in one region in Jaffna while Rajapaksa’s ally Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) has defeated the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in another region of Jaffna district.
