New Delhi The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to conduct environmental audits and recover damages from e-commerce companies Amazon and Flipkart for violating environmental standards.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson AK Goel said, “The CPCB has filed a report giving one or other reasons for not enforcing the law, but it was done directly by the CPCB or in coordination with the state pollution control boards. There is no mention of the action taken. The CPCB may consider ordering an environmental audit against the entities concerned and assessing the violation of environmental standards and recovering damages for the same. ‘ The tribunal has summoned the action report via e-mail before 14 October. The CPCB member secretary will also have to be personally present on the next hearing.
Do not use more plastic in packaging
The tribunal was hearing a petition filed by 16-year-old Aditya Dubey demanding that Amazon and Flipkart be ordered not to use excess plastic in the packaging of the goods supplied.
