Apple’s ‘One More Thing’ event tonight: What to expect

Tonight Apple is set to hold perhaps its last event of 2020. About 10 days back, the Cupertino-based tech giant sent out invites for its One More Thing event. It is widely expected that Apple will announce its first computers that will be powered by its own Arm-based silicon chips.

Multiple reports have suggested that new MacBooks featuring Apple’s own processors. A report by Bloomberg suggests that Apple may unveil three new models — 13-inch MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro and a 16-inch MacBook Pro. All three laptops will feature the new silicon chips. However, it is expected that beyond the processor, there won’t be any other design change to the MacBook line up.

Ming-Chi Kuo, noted Apple analyst, however, said that Apple may unveil just a 13-inch MacBook Pro at the event. Kuo, earlier said that a new MacBook Air powered by Apple’s own chip will arrive at the end of this year or early in 2021.
An earlier report has suggested that by using its own silicon chips, the cost of MacBooks may very well be reduced. A report by The New York Times had revealed that Apple spends close to $3.4 billion on Intel processors.

Do keep in mind that Apple — by launching its own processor — isn’t really severing ties completely with Intel. The company will continue to have Intel-powered MacBooks in its line up, at least for the foreseeable future.

As far as its own processors are concerned, it is rumoured that they may be called A14X. The processor is expected to be really powerful with eight high-performance cores and four energy-efficient cores.
