A complete of 965 earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above had been recorded final yr and 13 of them had been within the National Capital Region and its neighborhood, Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardhan mentioned on Friday.
In a written reply to a query within the Lok Sabha, Vardhan mentioned “possibilities are being explored” to take up pilot examine on earthquake early-warning system in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey.
Vardhan mentioned the National Center for Seismology (NCS), below the Ministry of Earth Sciences, maintained a nationwide seismological community, comprising 115 seismic stations, to watch the earthquake exercise in and across the nation.
“During the final yr, a complete of 965 earthquakes with magnitude 3 and above have been reported by NCS.
Out of which, 13 earthquakes had been recorded in National Capital Region (NCR) and its neighborhood,” he mentioned.
Vardhan mentioned no confirmed system was accessible at current within the nation to offer the early warning of earthquakes.
“However, possibilities are being explored to take up a pilot study on earthquake early warning system in collaboration with United States Geological Survey,” Vardhan mentioned.
Vardhan mentioned the NCS had initiated magnetotelluric geophysical survey, interpretation of satellite tv for pc imageries and geological subject investigations in Delhi and environment in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun.
The function of those research is to find and characterise the key seismic sources/fault strains in Delhi and environment.
