Born in a village referred to as Chauri in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, Ahilya Bai was married to Khanderao, son of Malharrao. Ahilya Bai Holkar dominated by making Maheshwar the capital. Ahilya Bai constructed temples, ghats, bawdis and opened grain areas within the well-known pilgrimage locations of India outdoors the boundaries of her kingdom.
