Austria ahead Marko Arnautovic was banned Wednesday for one match on the European Championship for insulting a North Macedonian opponent.
Arnautovic was charged with “insulting another player” underneath UEFA’s disciplinary guidelines.
He was accused by the North Macedonian soccer federation of insulting Ezgjan Alioski. Alioski’s household roots are Albanian. Arnautovic’s father is Serbian and his mom is Austrian.
Arnautovic may have been banned for 10 video games if UEFA had discovered his feedback to be racist or insulting based mostly on ethnic origin.
The incident flared after Arnautovic scored Austria’s third objective in a 3-1 victory over North Macedonia on Sunday in Bucharest, Romania. He later apologized on Instagram for “some heated words” and mentioned he was not a racist.
Alioski later mentioned he had not heard what Arnautovic mentioned in Serbian. That left it unclear how UEFA may show a cost of racism or ethnic discrimination.
Arnautovic will miss Austria’s sport in opposition to the Netherlands on Thursday in Amsterdam. Both groups received their opening video games in Group C.
