CANNES: Netflix and the opposite streaming giants have but to find one nice director, the top of the Cannes Film Festival mentioned Monday.
Thierry Fremaux threw petrol on the simmering feud between the French festival– the world’s greatest — and the US platform when he challenged reporters to “name me a director who has been discovered by a platform” on the eve of Cannes’ opening.
“Not yet, even after 10 years…”, Fremaux added archly as journalists struggled to provide you with a reputation.Netflix has successfully boycotted Cannes since 2018 after being advised it needed to present its movies on the large display in France if it needed them to compete for its Palme d’Or prime prize.
While Fremaux praised Netflix — which started streaming in 2007 — for his or her”extraordinary work”, he was fast to show the knife in his defence of the magic of the large display.

“We just celebrated the 125th anniversary of the invention of cinema. Let us see if in 100 years we will celebrate the birthday of the platforms. “I do not assume Netflix or the others can skip the Cannes movie pageant,” he warned. “Youwillseethe names of the longer term in our line-up…,” he added. “That is why the dialogue should be opened.”Relations between Cannes and the Californian tech large started to show bitter in 2017 after French cinema homeowners protested over the inclusion of two of the streamer’s films in the principle competitors.
‘An even bigger state of affairs’The following 12 months Cannes modified its guidelines requiring a French launch for movies competing for the Palme d’Or, however permitting streaming-only films out of competitors.
Netflix retaliated by withdrawing three movies from Cannes on the final minute in a transfer that appeared to be timed to trigger most chaos.
With the cinema world aghast, and Cannes solid because the defender of the large display and conventional cinema, Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings later admitted that that they had gone too far.
“Sometimes we make mistakes. We got into a bigger situation with Cannes than we meant to,” he mentioned.
