KOCHI: Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty on Saturday criticised the stand of sure IUML leaders on the state authorities’s gender-neutral coverage, alleging that they had been attempting to mislead the individuals and sought to know why they’re afraid of equal alternative for girls within the society.
Slamming the statements of IUML leaders M Ok Muneer and P M A Salam on the difficulty, Sivankutty stated the state authorities has repeatedly clarified its stand a number of occasions and those that are criticising the initiatives for gender equality, gender justice and gender consciousness will not be studying the writings of time on the wall.
He was talking on the sidelines of a college students’ programme organised at Kalamassery right here.
“In recent days, we have seen the statements of some leaders regarding gender equality. Why are they afraid of gender equality? Why are they worried about equal opportunity and equal justice for their mother, sister, wife and daughter?” he requested.
Sivankutty made it clear that if it was the case of gender-neutral uniform or combined colleges, the CPI(M)-led authorities doesn’t impose any compulsion on anybody.
The authorities was not insisting on carrying any specific uniform or to transform any specific women/boys college as a combined establishment, he defined.
“However, certain persons are trying to mislead the people despite repeated clarification by the government in this regard,” the minister added.
After Muneer, it was Salam who had made one other controversial comment on Friday saying girls and boys seated collectively in colleges was “dangerous”.
While talking in a seminar on Thursday, Muneer had triggered an issue asking, “If there is gender neutrality, why do you need a POCSO case? Therefore, when you say gender neutrality, you need to think about the many people in society who will misuse it.”
However, he had clarified later that what he had meant to convey was that he was afraid gender neutrality can be outlined in such a fashion that provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act would turn into ineffective.
