CHANDIGARH: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) took a suo moto cognizance of the Ludhiana gasoline leak which claimed 11 lives. The victims embrace three minors.
An NGT bench headed by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel constituted an eight-member fact-finding panel. It is likely to be headed by the chairperson of the Punjab State Pollution Control Board.
The tribunal directed the Ludhiana district Justice of the Peace to pay Rs 20 lakh each to the next of kin of the victims who died after inhaling toxic gasoline.
The panel would comprise as its members, Regional Director (North), CPCB, Industrial Toxicology Research Centre (ITRC), Lucknow, a nominee of Director, PGI Chandigarh, a nominee of
NDRF, State PCB, District Magistrate, Ludhiana and Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana.
State PCB will act as nodal firm for coordination and compliance.
The committee may meet inside one week and full its job ideally inside one month.
It is likely to be free to work along with one other division, institution or specific individual and undertake visits to concerned web sites. The committee is likely to be free to function on-line or offline as a result of the state of affairs may warrant.
The Committee may give its report again to this Tribunal on or sooner than June 30, acknowledged the bench comprising Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member Dr A Senthil Vel.
The bench further acknowledged, “Meanwhile, the District Magistrate, Ludhiana may assure price of compensation of Rs. 20 lakhs each to the heirs of 11 people who’ve died, deducting the portions, if any, already paid inside one month. The Committee may level out the small print of people who’ve died and people injured with the extent of accidents suffered by them. It can even counsel measures to be taken ultimately to forestall such incidents.’’
