In a moment of national celebration just before Republic Day, India’s government has revealed the 2024 Padma Awards, honoring 131 individuals for their stellar contributions. The Home Ministry’s list, released Sunday, spotlights excellence amid diversity and inclusivity.

Comprising five Padma Vibhushans, 13 Bhushans, and 113 Shris, the awards include 19 women, six from global Indian diaspora, and 16 posthumous recognitions that touch the heart.

The highest honor, Padma Vibhushan, posthumously crowns Dharmendra Singh Deol for his enduring impact on Indian cinema. Joined by KT Thomas (public affairs, Kerala), N Rajam (art, Uttar Pradesh), P Narayanan (literature & education, Kerala), and the late VS Achyutanandan (public affairs, Kerala).

Padma Bhushan recipients form a powerhouse lineup: Alka Yagnik’s voice (Maharashtra), Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s leadership (Uttarakhand), Kallipatti Ramasamy Palaniswami’s service (Tamil Nadu), Mammootty’s artistry (Kerala), Dr. Nori Dattatreudu and Vijay Amritraj (USA), late Piyush Pandey (Maharashtra), SKM Maillanandan (Tamil Nadu), Shatavadhani R Ganesh (Karnataka), Shibu Soren posthumously (Jharkhand), Uday Kotak (Maharashtra), late VK Malhotra (Delhi), and Vellappally Natesan (Kerala).

These civilian honors, instituted post-independence, cover arts, public life, science, business, healthcare, education, sports, and governance. Each tier—Vibhushan for exceptional, Bhushan for distinguished, Shri for distinguished service—reflects graduated excellence.

Ceremonies at Rashtrapati Bhavan in spring will see the President bestow these medals, a tradition that binds generations in pride. The 2024 list reaffirms India’s commitment to recognizing merit beyond fame.
