Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Addis Ababa on January 8 launched the ninth China-African Union strategic dialogue, co-hosted with AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat. The event at AU headquarters highlights evolving partnerships amid global shifts.

Emphasizing the AU’s leadership in continental integration, Wang Yi described its indispensable position in China-Africa dynamics. President Xi Jinping’s annual greetings to the AU summit over 13 years illustrate Beijing’s steadfast focus.

2024 ushers in the 70th anniversary of diplomatic exchanges with Africa and continues the 36-year tradition of Chinese FMs prioritizing the continent. These milestones affirm enduring policy reliability and shared developing nation bonds.

With both regions advancing rapidly, Wang outlined expansive collaboration horizons. China seeks to extend developmental gains to Africa, pursuing collective modernization while defending Global South priorities. Strong backing for AU’s steering role and enhanced cooperation via four global initiatives were pledged.

Mahamat hailed the friendship as one of trust and reciprocity. Expressing appreciation for China’s unwavering aid, he reaffirmed the one-China commitment and Taiwan support. The AU looks forward to partnering with China on upholding fairness, justice, and peaceful advancement worldwide.
