Another day, another tragedy in Bangladesh. On Saturday, Gazipur district witnessed the brutal lynching of Hindu trader Liton Ghosh (55), owner of Baishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel, making it the ninth Hindu killed in 30 days. Police detained three family members accused of the heinous act triggered by a petty farm dispute.

The violence erupted midday when Masum Mia (28) accused a minor shop boy of pilfering banana leaves from his plot. The verbal spat exploded into physical aggression, with Masum’s parents – Swapna Mia (55) and Majida Khatun (45) – rushing to the scene and piling on.

Heroically attempting to de-escalate and protect his employee, Liton faced the full brunt of the assault. A devastating spade blow to the head proved fatal, ending his life amid the chaos at his Barnagar Road establishment.

Local fury led to the swift capture of the suspects, who were turned over to authorities. Kaliganj Thana OC Mohammad Zakir Hossain verified the facts, noting the accused are in custody as a murder FIR proceeds. Further inquiries aim to uncover motives beyond the initial trigger.

This string of atrocities has sparked widespread alarm among Bangladesh’s Hindu population, prompting demands for robust protection and accountability. Liton’s death not only shatters a family but amplifies calls for communal harmony in a nation on edge.
