World No.1 Iga Swiatek mentioned that she was so awestruck after watching Serena Williams that she struggled to make eye-contact with the American veteran. Both Serena and Swiatek are set to participate within the upcoming Cincinnati Open.
Swiatek, who lately misplaced to Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia within the Round of 16 of the Canadian Open, mentioned that she hasn’t been in a position to say ‘hi’ to Serena due to her shy nature.
“I have a hard time catching eye contact with Serena. And I just wanted to say ‘Hi’ a few times. But it’s tough because she always has so many people around her and I’m pretty shy,” Swiatek was quoted as saying within the pre-tournament press convention.
“When I look at her, I suddenly kind of forget that I’m here as the World No. 1. I see Serena and it’s, ‘Wow, Serena!’ You know? And I feel like I’m a kid from kindergarten just looking at her. So it’s tough. I haven’t talked to her, but I’m just trying to say hi,” she acknowledged.
“It would be the last chance to play her. I’d love to, if only to see how it is to face her on the other side of the net,” she added.
Swiatek is ready to lock horns with America’s Sloane Stephens within the Round of 32 match in Cincinnati on Wednesday, August 17. Serena, alternatively, is scheduled to face Britain’s Emma Raducanu on the identical day at Centre Court.
Earlier, the 40-year-old Serena hinted at retiring from tennis after the top of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
