By Press Trust of India: Nepal’s former deputy prime minister and residential minister Rabi Lamichhane on Sunday reacquired his citizenship certificates, two days after he needed to resign following a call by the nation’s Supreme Court to scrap his standing as a member of the House of Representatives for not producing a legitimate nationality certificates.
Lamichhane on Friday tendered his resignation after the apex courtroom’s verdict.
He re-acquired a citizenship certificates from District Administration Office Kathmandu by producing the required paperwork.
According to Lamichhane’s Press Advisor Navaraj Pande, Lamichhane “re-acquired a Nepali citizenship certificate on Sunday.”
After re-acquiring the citizenship certificates, Lamichhane was re-elected because the president of the Rastriya Swotantra Party.
Lamichhane was stripped of all positions – together with the posts of Deputy Prime Minister, Home Minister, member of the House of Representatives and get together president after the Supreme Courts determination.
Lamichhane had in February 1994 acquired citizenship by descent from the District Administration Office, Kathmandu. In 2014, he received American citizenship. His Nepali citizenship was routinely scrapped the day he turned an American citizen, as per Nepal’s Citizenship Act.
Section 10 of the Act says any Nepali citizen who voluntarily obtains citizenship of a international nation will routinely lose citizenship of Nepal. The Act additionally makes it necessary to use for reclaim Nepali citizenship if one renounces his/her international citizenship. But Lamichhane didn’t apply for Nepali citizenship after renouncing his American citizenship.
