A 19-year-old from Arizona, Renna O’Rourke, has died as a result of participating in the ‘dusting’ challenge, a dangerous trend circulating on social media. The challenge involves inhaling household cleaners to achieve a high. O’Rourke suffered cardiac arrest after inhaling an aerosol keyboard cleaner, which her boyfriend had acquired without her family’s knowledge. She was admitted to the ICU for four days before being declared brain dead. ‘Dusting,’ also known as ‘huffing’ or ‘chroming,’ poses significant health risks, including the potential for heart failure. Renna’s family is now focused on raising awareness about the dangers of this trend and is encouraging parents to be vigilant about their children’s activities. The family has also initiated a GoFundMe page to help with medical bills and therapy costs. Sadly, this situation mirrors a similar occurrence in the UK in March 2024, where a young boy lost his life after inhaling toxic substances.
