With the ongoing attacks from Israel, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is reportedly taking refuge in a bunker. Amidst the current instability, he has selected potential successors from within his military command structure. Khamenei is communicating with his commanders through a trusted aide, and has suspended electronic communications to avoid being tracked. The New York Times indicates that Khamenei has named three senior clerics as possible replacements, highlighting the uncertainty and urgency of the situation. The Israeli strikes, the most significant since the Iran-Iraq war, have caused substantial damage in Tehran. In response, Iran is conducting daily attacks on Israeli targets. The leaders are also assessing potential future outcomes, including the possibility of U.S. involvement. The usual lengthy procedure for choosing a new supreme leader is being accelerated to ensure a smooth leadership transition and preserve the current political landscape. Vali Nasr emphasizes that preserving the state is paramount. The Supreme Leader maintains considerable authority, controlling the armed forces, judicial system, parliament, and religious affairs. Surprisingly, Mojtaba, Khamenei’s son, is not among the potential successors.
