Tesla has introduced its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, starting with a trial for social media influencers. This initial phase gives influencers a chance to experience the driverless rides before a wider public launch. The cost per ride is ₹365, equivalent to $4.20, according to Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, who sees this as the result of a decade of work. Videos show Tesla vehicles operating autonomously within defined areas of Austin, with service hours from 6 AM to midnight, weather permitting. The Robotaxi software and AI chip were developed internally at Tesla. About 10 vehicles, primarily Model Y SUVs, are being used in this trial, with safety riders present. Influencer Sawyer Merritt shared his positive experience, highlighting the ride’s comfort and smoothness. Bookings are made through a Tesla Robotaxi app. Expansion plans could be affected by a new Texas law that mandates state permits for self-driving vehicles and allows for permit revocation if there’s perceived public risk. In Austin, Tesla will compete with Waymo, partnered with Uber, and Amazon’s Zoox. Currently, the Robotaxi service is operational, but with limited availability.
