Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a 15-day caste census, starting September 22, to address social and educational disparities. The survey, which will end on October 7, will generate a report for the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission by the end of October, aiding in budget planning. The census, as proposed by the Backward Classes Commission, will include about seven crore people. Apart from caste details, the survey will collect data on economic conditions and land ownership. The government plans to make this a model survey for the country and is emphasizing thorough preparation. The decision to conduct the new survey came after the 2015 survey was invalidated due to legal complications. The current census aligns with the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission Act, 1995, and follows directives from Congress leaders. The new census will be more extensive than previous efforts and include a mobile app to improve accuracy. The questionnaire will be prepared by a committee of experts. The government will learn from a similar survey in Telangana, and is committed to a transparent process. Around 1.65 lakh enumerators, including teachers and government employees, will be involved in the survey.
