The Supreme Court is currently reviewing the Maharashtra government’s petition, which challenges the Bombay High Court’s decision to acquit all twelve individuals linked to the 2006 Mumbai train bombings. The bombings tragically resulted in the deaths of 189 people. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing Maharashtra, requested an urgent hearing before the Supreme Court, emphasizing the critical nature of the matter. The High Court’s ruling overturned a 2015 judgment from a special court, established under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The special court had previously sentenced five individuals to death and seven to life imprisonment. The individuals in question have already served approximately 18 years in prison. Despite the special court’s acquittal of one individual, the state did not appeal this specific decision to the High Court.
