Suvendu Adhikari, the BJP’s Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of using the ‘Bhasha Aandolan’ as a means to obstruct the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Adhikari called the move a ‘drama’ to stop the process. Furthermore, he accused Banerjee of being the ‘protector’ of Bangladeshi Muslims, alleging that her vote bank is made up of infiltrators, Bangladeshis, and Rohingyas. This response comes after Banerjee’s criticisms of the Election Commission of India’s actions regarding voter lists in Bihar and her concerns about similar actions in West Bengal. The ECI stated that any name removals from the electoral rolls would follow due process.
