Australia is set to implement a ban on YouTube accounts for individuals under the age of 16, starting this December. This move adds to the country’s existing restrictions on other social media platforms, such as TikTok and Instagram. The decision, recommended by the eSafety Commissioner, recognizes that YouTube exposes children to risks similar to those found on more traditional social media platforms. Australian leaders have emphasized the government’s commitment to digital child safety and mental health. Research has shown that YouTube is a very popular platform for Australian children, with a significant percentage reporting exposure to harmful content. Under the new rules, children under 16 will be able to watch YouTube videos but will be prevented from creating accounts and accessing features like commenting and personalized recommendations.
