In *Materialists*, Dakota Johnson plays Lucy Mason, a matchmaker, set in a world of the wealthy. The film, however, struggles with its execution. The dialogue feels stilted, and the performances appear rehearsed, making the film difficult to connect with. The story depicts the unhappiness of the upper class. The film presents the shallow nature of their quest for companionship through parties. Lucy’s romantic life lacks depth. She meets Harry (Pedro Pascal), the perfect man, but the story reveals an unusual secret about him. The men in Lucy’s life lack self-respect. They stay around Lucy although she treats them poorly. The film, largely monotonous, is missing any real highpoints. The film focuses on a client named Sophie (Zoe Winters), who is searching for love. The film does not live up to the potential for a rom-com. It is directed by Celine Song, known for her work on *Past Lives*.
