Following the announcement by the former President, the United States is moving forward with the development of the Golden Dome, a missile defense system modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome. The Golden Dome, designed to be a multi-layered system, will include one layer in space and three on the ground. The system will have 11 short-range missile batteries stationed across various locations in the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii. The goal is to have the system operational by 2028, with an estimated project cost of $175 billion. The Golden Dome’s design will be more advanced, including satellite sensors, ground-based interceptors, radar and potentially laser weapons. The aim is to intercept missiles in their boost phase. This is in response to the diverse threats and expansive geography of the United States. The project has received funding from Congress, with additional funding planned for the 2026 budget.
