Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, has publicly lauded his nation’s troops engaged in Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. State media reported that Kim offered high praise during a meeting with military officers involved in overseas operations. According to the KCNA, Kim conveyed “warm encouragement” to the officials and soldiers stationed in Russia’s Kursk region. Intelligence agencies in the West estimate that North Korea has sent over 10,000 fighters to this area. In addressing members of the military, Kim highlighted the bravery of the army, stating that it is fulfilling its obligations. North Korea confirmed in April that it had deployed troops to fight alongside Russian forces. This action was taken after the strategic partnership treaty signed by Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin in June of the prior year, which included a mutual defense agreement. South Korean and Western intelligence sources have indicated that Pyongyang dispatched over 10,000 soldiers to the Kursk region in 2024, along with artillery, missiles, and long-range rocket systems. Approximately 600 North Korean soldiers have reportedly been killed, and thousands more wounded, while fighting on behalf of Russia. Kim’s comments were made as the United States President Donald Trump is involved in talks seeking to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
