An investigation by the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) led to a raid on the home of Vinod Kumar Rai, a superintendent engineer in Patna’s rural works department. The raid was initiated due to suspicions of Rai’s involvement in financial misconduct. To evade the investigation, Rai allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by burning currency notes and hiding cash. The EOU’s investigation began after receiving information on August 21st. The information indicated that Rai was transporting a large sum of cash in a white Innova vehicle. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate. The raid revealed that Rai had burned a significant amount of cash. The burnt currency and related documents were found in the toilet pipes, leading to blocked drains. Municipal workers were required to clear the blockages. Approximately 39.50 lakh rupees were found hidden in the water tank. The total cash recovered, including the burnt currency, was about 52 lakh rupees. The authorities also seized jewelry worth 26 lakh rupees, along with documents related to insurance policies, property, and an Innova Crysta car. The documents are being evaluated. Rai has been arrested and is being interrogated. Babli Rai, Rai’s wife, also faces legal charges for obstructing the investigation.
