Pakistan: Punjab Province Hit by Devastating Floods Following Heavy Rainfall

The Punjab province of Pakistan is currently experiencing a critical situation due to torrential rainfall, leading to widespread difficulties for the populace. Authorities have warned that the rain is expected to persist for the next two days. Over the past 24 hours, approximately 20,000 individuals have been moved to safer locations due to rising water levels in the rivers. The evacuation operations are primarily concentrated in flood-affected districts, particularly those located near the Indus, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Jhelum rivers. Multiple villages in Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, and Vehari have been submerged. The situation is especially perilous along the banks of the Sutlej and Ravi rivers, and high alerts have been implemented in the affected districts. Relief camps have been set up to provide medical supplies, vaccinations, and other necessities. People are advised to stay away from river areas and use helpline 1129 for assistance. The PDMA is actively engaged in emergency responses across multiple districts, anticipating that the monsoon will remain active until August 27. Ganda Singh Wala is facing a severe crisis, with the Sutlej River exceeding the danger level. The administration is working to provide basic facilities in relief camps. Additionally, a glacial outburst flood in Gilgit-Baltistan has caused significant destruction. More than 3,000 residents have been displaced in Talidas village of Ghizer district, which is considered the largest such incident in Pakistan since 2010.
