Six Bengali migrant workers, arrested in Delhi on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals, are currently in jail in Bangladesh. The workers were initially detained in Delhi’s Rohini area and then deported. Upon their arrival in Bangladesh, they were arrested by the Bangladeshi police on suspicion of being infiltrators. Their families are pleading with the state government to intervene and secure their return.
The families allege that the Bangladeshi police arrested them from Chapai Nawabganj, Bangladesh, a few days before, on suspicion of illegal entry. They were then presented before a Bangladeshi court and are now in jail. Among the detained is Sonali Khatun, who lived in Rohini Sector 26, Delhi, with her husband Danish Sheikh and their five-year-old son Sabir Sheikh. Sonali is eight months pregnant and was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 17th. All the detained individuals are from Birbhum, Bengal.
On June 26th, they were deported to Bangladesh. Furthermore, Sweety Bibi and her two sons, residents of Dhitra village under Murarai police station, were also arrested by the Delhi Police and sent to Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi police then arrested them in Nawabganj, Bangladesh, on the grounds of suspected infiltration and charged them under the Passport-Foreign Act.
