The issue of Maratha reservation has sparked a political exchange between current Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. This follows a hunger strike by Manoj Jarange Patil in Mumbai, joined by numerous Maratha protestors, advocating for OBC quota reservation for the Maratha community. Thackeray had voiced support for the protestors’ demands, drawing a sharp response from Shinde.
Shinde emphasized the 10% reservation provided by his government and its ongoing benefits. He also cited ‘Sarathi’ initiatives offering financial support and hostel facilities to support Maratha youth in UPSC and MPSC exams. Shinde added that the reservation provided by the previous government led by Devendra Fadnavis was not continued by the subsequent Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
Shinde defended his government’s commitment to ensuring the economic advancement of the Maratha community and the protection of their reservation. He questioned Thackeray’s leadership during his term, probing why meetings weren’t called. He also questioned the motivations behind the opposition’s current criticisms, suggesting they clarify their stance on the matter.
Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray said that the community needed to seek justice in Mumbai, referencing statements by Fadnavis. Thackeray questioned why the Marathas were not receiving the needed reservation.
