In a pre-arranged call, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday, prior to a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was the second time the two leaders had spoken by phone in August.

Prime Minister Modi thanked President Zelenskyy for the conversation and reaffirmed India’s support for peaceful resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Posting on X, Prime Minister Modi wrote, “We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspect, and efforts to restore peace and stability. India extends full support to all efforts in this direction.”

The call took place the day before Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Vladimir Putin at the SCO summit in China. The two leaders had previously spoken on August 11.

President Zelenskyy shared his perspectives on the current situation. The Prime Minister’s Office noted, “The Prime Minister thanked President Zelenskyy and reaffirmed India’s firm and consistent stance on a peaceful resolution of the conflict and efforts to restore peace soon. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to provide all possible cooperation in this regard.”

Both leaders also reviewed the advances in the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership, with discussion on how to “further enhance cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.” They agreed to stay connected.

Zelenskyy stated that he shared details on the conversations with President Trump in Washington. He noted it was an important discussion. Ukraine is ready to engage with the Russian leader.

Zelenskyy mentioned Ukraine is coordinating its position before the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. He emphasized the need for the conflict to end with an immediate ceasefire, and lasting peace. He added meaningful peace talks are impossible while cities are continually attacked. India is prepared to offer assistance and send the appropriate message to Russia and other leaders during the summit. Discussions also included bilateral relations, planning for exchange visits, and the meeting of a joint inter-governmental commission.
