White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro has strongly defended US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on goods from India, accompanied by accusations against the Brahmin community of ‘profiteering at the expense of the Indian people.’ Speaking on Fox News, Navarro alleged that India functions as a ‘laundromat for the Kremlin,’ citing concerns over trade imbalances and geopolitical alignments that conflict with US interests. While he praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Navarro expressed concern regarding India’s relationships with Russia and China. He suggested that these alliances undermine India’s global standing as a democracy. He argued that India’s high tariffs have detrimental consequences for American workers and taxpayers. These remarks followed a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Earlier, Navarro accused India of benefitting from Russian oil and acting as a refining hub, thereby circumventing sanctions.
