The Indian Navy is strategically enhancing its underwater combat capabilities by incorporating nine new submarines into its fleet. Discussions are currently ongoing to determine the pricing details, and following this, the proposal will be presented to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for final approval. These submarines are slated to be manufactured at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. In 2005, India entered into an agreement with France’s Naval Group, resulting in the acquisition of six Scorpene-class submarines under Project-75. These submarines are considered highly advanced attack submarines, capable of launching torpedoes and anti-ship missiles while maintaining a high degree of stealth. The Indian Navy is also anticipating the arrival of three more submarines under the Project-75 follow-on order. Additionally, contracts are being finalized for six new submarines under Project-75 India, bringing the total to nine new submarines in the coming years. Complementing this expansion, the government has given the go-ahead for the construction of two nuclear attack submarines (SSN) to further augment naval strength. Presently, India’s naval arsenal includes 17 diesel-electric submarines and 2 nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN). The initial indigenous SSN submarine is anticipated to be inducted into the Navy by 2036-37.
