A devastating event occurred in Lisbon on Wednesday evening, as the Elevador da Gloria funicular derailed, leading to a crash that resulted in at least 15 fatalities and 18 injuries. Among the injured, five are in critical condition. The accident happened shortly after 6 pm, with initial reports suggesting a cable failure. This led to the funicular losing control and crashing into a nearby building. The Elevador da Gloria, established in 1885, is a well-known cable railway, linking Restauradores Square to the Bairro Alto district. It is a vital part of the city’s transportation network, serving both residents and tourists. The two-car system is managed by Carris, Lisbon’s public transport operator, and each tram has a capacity of 42 passengers. Both Portuguese citizens and foreign nationals were among the victims. No children were among those who died. Both those inside the derailed car and pedestrians in the vicinity were affected. By 8:30 pm, all the injured were taken to local hospitals. Six individuals, including a child and one person with severe injuries, were admitted to Santa Maria Hospital. Nine others, with five in critical condition, were taken to São Jose Hospital. Lisbon’s Mayor, Carlos Moedas, expressed his deep sorrow and declared three days of municipal mourning in response to the tragedy.
