Nepal is witnessing significant protests led by the younger generation. The core demands include government accountability and transparency, arising in response to a government-imposed ban on social media. The demonstrations have drawn global attention, partly due to the protesters’ adoption of the ‘Jolly Roger’ flag from the anime ‘One Piece.’ This flag, representing the Straw Hat Pirates, symbolizes freedom and unity, resonating with the youth’s aspirations. The use of the ‘Jolly Roger’ flag reflects a broader trend, as it has been employed in protests elsewhere, notably in Indonesia. The anime, created by Eiichiro Oda, is based on the manga and follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew. The anime and the live-action series have become major hits. The protests originated on September 8 in major cities, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj, after the social media ban was imposed by the government, citing concerns about revenue and cybersecurity. The demonstrations have resulted in injuries and deaths and led to the government reversing the ban.
