In a recent interview, Syria’s interim President Al-Shara made a startling claim: Russia secretly collaborated with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), leading to HTS’s takeover of Damascus and the subsequent removal of Assad. The information comes to light a year after the events. Al-Shara alleges that the betrayal came from Vladimir Putin, a close ally of Assad. According to Al-Shara, HTS, with Russia’s support, gained control of Damascus. The interview was aired on the state-owned Al-Ikhbariyah TV channel. During the interview, Al-Shara stated that his forces initiated private talks with Russia while HTS launched its operation against Assad. Al-Shara explained that his forces encountered little resistance on November 27 and quickly took Aleppo. Following this, they moved towards Hama, a key location en route to Damascus. Al-Shara stated that communications were open between their forces and Russia throughout this phase. He added that Russia did not engage in the fighting as HTS advanced toward Homs. As a result of the arrangement, Assad was compelled to leave the country on December 8, and Al-Shara’s forces gained control of Damascus. Al-Shara additionally revealed that his forces intentionally avoided attacking the Russian airbase near Jabla, prioritizing the continuation of a positive relationship with Russia. He underlined the importance of Russia on the world stage, highlighting its role in the Security Council. He emphasized the need to safeguard and strengthen the established bond between Syria and Russia. Since Al-Shara took power, his political direction has been a subject of speculation. The recent revelations suggest Al-Shara is navigating the interests of his country in coordination with both superpowers. After a nine-month break, Putin’s forces are returning to Syria. This move could be seen as a blow to the United States and Turkey. The Russian military entered Syria via the Kamishli airport. The Syrian government, under Al-Shara, had previously invited the Russian forces, hoping to avert Syria’s potential division.
