The Bombay High Court has ruled in favor of playback singer Asha Bhosle in a case concerning personality rights. The court’s decision, delivered on Thursday, protects Bhosle’s rights, specifically preventing any misuse of her name, image, or voice. The ruling explicitly bans the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replicate her voice without her permission.
The court asserted that the use of AI tools to create unauthorized voice clones of celebrities is a violation of their personality rights. Justice Arif S. Doctor stated that such tools facilitate the unauthorized appropriation and manipulation of a celebrity’s voice, a fundamental aspect of their individual identity and public persona.
