Mirroring the wave of protests seen in Nepal, Moroccan Gen Z has initiated widespread demonstrations, beginning in late September. This expression of discontent has led to demands for the government’s removal, with protesters seeking the King’s intervention to dissolve the administration. Sadly, the protests have resulted in three deaths. The GenZ 212 group is demanding the government’s resignation, focusing on issues like corruption, the need for improved healthcare services, better education, and increased employment prospects. This dissatisfaction has culminated in a call for the government’s removal. The group is a platform for discussing issues relevant to all citizens, such as health, education, and corruption. The protests are a response to the neglect of public services and the country’s deep-seated social and regional inequalities, high unemployment, and pervasive corruption. The core demands of the group include reforms in public health and education, perceived as the most severe manifestations of social inequality. While the private health sector is doing better, many public hospitals in Morocco are overcrowded and suffer from resource shortages. Despite the launch of universal health coverage in 2021, access to treatment remains challenging for poorer Moroccans. Public schools often face overcrowding and lack of investment. The group is also raising the question of the 2030 World Cup, as they believe that resources should be diverted to improve health and education systems. The group is also making demands for more investment in hospitals. The government is investing in infrastructure, including stadium renovations and a new stadium costing nearly $1.7 billion, as well as railway improvements, 5G internet, and airport upgrades.
