The historic Martand Sun Temple in Anantnag became a beacon of light and unity on Diwali eve, as Kashmiri Pandits performed their traditional rituals with deep reverence. The ancient Surya Mandir in Mattan was illuminated by thousands of diyas, marking a significant cultural observance.
Adding a special dimension to this year’s festivities was the participation of the local Muslim community, who joined their Pandit neighbors in celebrating Diwali. This interfaith engagement served as a powerful reminder of the region’s rich history of communal harmony and enduring brotherhood.
The temple complex and its vicinity were adorned with vibrant lights and lamps, creating a joyous and welcoming environment. Citizens of Anantnag town also extended their participation, exchanging sweets and greetings, further enhancing the sense of togetherness.
This inclusive approach, with Muslims joining the Diwali festivities at the Sun Temple, is a long-standing annual tradition that champions unity and friendship, becoming a hallmark of the event.
The primary Lakshmi Puja was conducted on the auspicious Amavasya tithi, with subsequent rituals and community gatherings continuing late into the night. The Martand Tirath Trust emphasizes the temple’s unique belief as the Sun’s birthplace, adding a special spiritual aura to the Diwali celebrations.
Beyond its traditional and religious aspects, this year’s event symbolized the community’s collective hope for a return to the normalcy and harmony that characterized Kashmir before the events of the early 1990s.
