Khunti district is now under the severe grip of winter, with temperatures plummeting significantly, making mornings and nights extremely cold. The intense chill is forcing residents to seek refuge indoors shortly after sunset. A critical issue is the absence of proactive measures from the administration, which has not yet initiated blanket distribution or organized bonfires in public areas. This lack of support is disproportionately affecting the poor and vulnerable in Khunti, encompassing laborers who endure the cold on streets, at bus stations, and in market zones. The situation stands in stark contrast to previous years, where district authorities typically arranged for bonfires from the beginning of November. Residents are expressing discontent with the perceived administrative indifference and the lack of essential winter aid. Local representatives and block administrations have also been slow to respond, despite forecasts indicating a further drop in temperatures. Citizens and civil society groups are strongly urging the district administration to implement immediate cold-relief measures. Key demands include the prompt establishment of public bonfires and the commencement of a blanket distribution program for those in need. Social organizations are emphasizing the humanitarian imperative for rapid action to ensure no one has to suffer through freezing nights. When questioned about the delay in providing blankets, the Block Development Officer for Torpa stated that the supplies have not yet been delivered to the blocks. The Circle Officer for Torpa also noted that no official guidance has been issued by the district administration regarding the arrangement of bonfires.
