This official clarification aims to put an end to speculation and political debates that arose after a parliamentary bulletin mentioned a constitutional amendment bill concerning Chandigarh. The potential bill would have brought the Union Territory under Article 240, granting the President direct powers to frame regulations. This prospect had led to significant outcry from political leaders in Punjab, who viewed it as a potential threat to the state’s rights and its capital.
The MHA assured the public that any decision regarding Chandigarh’s administration will be made only after consulting all stakeholders, ensuring that Chandigarh’s interests are upheld. The current additional charge held by the Punjab Governor as Chandigarh’s administrator is not subject to immediate change through any bill proposed for this session.
