U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken Bruna Ferreira into custody. Ferreira is notably the former fiancée of Michael Leavitt, the brother of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, reported that Ferreira was apprehended by ICE agents while traveling to collect her son from school in New Hampshire. Pomerleau has strongly criticized the detention, labeling it as unwarranted and lacking justification. He emphasized Ferreira’s status as a U.S.-based business owner, taxpayer, and mother who poses no security threat or flight risk. Ferreira, who arrived in the U.S. as a child and was a DACA recipient, was in the process of applying for a green card. Government officials have indicated that she entered on a tourist visa and stayed beyond its validity, also referencing an alleged prior arrest for battery, which her lawyer denies and for which he claims no evidence has been presented. While some minor traffic violations appear on her record, her legal counsel insists these do not warrant her current detention. The case underscores the ongoing challenges within the U.S. immigration system.
