The BCCI is reportedly gearing up for a pivotal meeting to assess the future of senior cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in One Day Internationals. The discussions, slated to occur after the India-South Africa ODI series, will focus on their roles and potential participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Currently, Rohit and Virat are active only in ODIs. However, definitive clarity regarding their long-term role in the national team or their prospects for the next World Cup remains elusive. With a limited number of ODIs scheduled over the next year and a half, their place in the team for the future is a subject of considerable debate.

A BCCI source underscored the necessity of clear communication for players of their stature: “Providing clarity on expectations and their envisioned roles is paramount for players like Rohit and Kohli. Uncertainty can impact performance.”

The source also reflected on their recent form: “While they scored runs in the final ODI against Australia, the series was already lost and the bowlers had built a strong foundation. Their performance in the first two matches indicated some rustiness, which is a significant concern for any series.”

In a bid to enhance their match fitness and scoring touch, the BCCI is also expected to encourage Rohit and Virat to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting December 24. Their upcoming ODI engagements against South Africa, beginning November 30, will serve as a crucial evaluation period before the board finalizes its strategy for the ODI team’s future.
