The recent high-profile visit of the Russian President to India has illuminated a path towards significant defense pacts, underscoring the deep-rooted strategic alliance. A cornerstone of these discussions involves the ongoing modernization of India’s Sukhoi-30 fighter jets through a second phase of overhauls. This initiative seeks to imbue around 100 Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft with enhanced capabilities, ensuring they remain at the cutting edge of aerial warfare.

On the missile front, India is set to bolster its air combat power with potential acquisitions of the R-37 missile. With an impressive range exceeding 200 kilometers, these missiles are designed for long-range interception, significantly improving the IAF’s ability to counter advanced aerial threats. Further discussions are likely to revolve around advanced air defense systems, including the S-400 Triumf, with a potential deal for 280 missiles, and the S-500. The potent BrahMos missile family is also on the agenda, with explorations into its Next Generation variant and long-range capabilities, as well as potential joint ventures in hypersonic missile development.

These discussions represent a critical step in fortifying India’s defense infrastructure. The agreements signal a commitment to enhancing India’s military readiness and strengthening the strategic partnership with Russia through continued technological collaboration and defense procurements.
