The potential for significant military confrontations in South Asia in 2026 is high, primarily driven by increasing terrorist activity, according to a report from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). The US think tank specifically warns of renewed armed conflict between India and Pakistan, pointing to the persistent threat of terrorism. This concern is amplified by recent history, including an April terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians. India’s subsequent military operation, ‘Operation Sindoor,’ successfully neutralized over 100 terrorists and destroyed their launch pads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India’s air defenses also thwarted Pakistani drone attempts. The situation cooled temporarily following a ceasefire agreement. The CFR’s assessment also highlights the precarious relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan, anticipating potential conflict due to escalating cross-border militant actions, a situation exemplified by past incursions and airstrikes.
