Rising alarms over student suicides in elite institutions have led the Education Ministry to act decisively. Following the heartbreaking loss at IIT Kanpur, a specialized three-member panel has been appointed to conduct an in-depth inquiry and recommend preventive strategies.
Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe heads the group, supported by Dr. Jitendra Nagpal’s psychiatric insights and a senior ministry official. With a tight 15-day deadline, they will evaluate guideline compliance, incident timelines, and the adequacy of on-campus mental health resources.
Central to their work are the 2023 mental well-being directives, promoting sensitive faculty training, peer counseling setups, and vigilant early-intervention mechanisms to combat academic stress.
The review will expose any lapses in policies, complaint handling, advisory services, and support adequacy, while charting paths for systemic improvements.
By consulting students, faculty, and administrators—and securing necessary documentation—the committee ensures grounded, impactful suggestions for curbing such incidents.
The ministry’s broader vision prioritizes student holistic growth through sustained programs, including mental health workshops for educators and national forums, cultivating resilient, compassionate learning environments.
