A chilling kidnapping attempt targeting the family of a Mumbai police officer was narrowly prevented in Worli on Wednesday, thanks to a mother’s instincts and rapid community response. The suspect, caught in the act, is now in custody as investigations ramp up.
Details emerged from the Worli Police Camp, a typically secure enclave for law enforcement personnel. At approximately 6:30 PM, homemaker Komal Tawre, 33, was in her kitchen when her daughter-like neighbor, an eight-year-old, rushed in frantic: her five-year-old brother Smayts was being pulled away by an unknown man.
Arriving at the alleyway, Komal witnessed the horrifying sight – 55-year-old Laxman Chaudhary from Sakinaka yanking her son toward the Arabian Sea. Her piercing screams mobilized passersby, who physically separated the child from the aggressor.
Parallel to the melee, a bystander contacted authorities. Worli Police mobilized instantly, securing the scene and arresting Chaudhary without resistance. Smayts, the son of Colaba Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Sachin Tawre, was medically checked and returned home.
An FIR for kidnapping attempt has been filed. Interrogation reveals Chaudhary’s local ties, but motives remain murky – was it a random act, targeted harassment against police, or part of a broader scheme? Police are reviewing CCTV footage and tracing his movements.
Senior officers praised the seamless coordination: ‘The synergy between family, civilians, and force exemplifies Mumbai’s resilient spirit.’ As probes deepen, enhanced patrols around police residences signal heightened security measures amid rising concerns for officers’ kin.
