Republic Day eve brought jubilant news for cultural preservationists as the Padma Awards 2024 were declared. At the forefront is Bhagwandas Raikwar, 83, from Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, whose Padma Shri recognizes his heroic endeavors in upholding India’s primordial martial arts.
Nicknamed ‘Raikwar Dau,’ this veteran has devoted his life to the Chhatrasal Akhara in Sagar. Specializing in lathi combat, talwar techniques, and traditional akhara practices, he fights against their decline in an era dominated by modern sports.
His expertise stems from paternal guidance and guru training, which he has passed on tirelessly. Raikwar’s footprint spans Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and more, training generations while juggling bank employment for over 60 years.
Expressing overwhelming gratitude, Raikwar said, ‘This Padma Shri in the unsung heroes list feels divine.’ He stresses that these arts teach invaluable lessons in discipline and restraint, beyond mere physicality. Persistent advocacy through letters to officials underscores his commitment.
The award has sparked widespread celebration in Sagar and beyond, with family and students viewing it as a milestone for akhara heritage. Raikwar’s story is a clarion call: in a fast-changing world, such guardians ensure ancient wisdom endures, fostering national pride and cultural resilience.
