Manipur’s sporting soul stirred to life at the venerable Imphal Polo Ground, where Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla kicked off the 7th Manipur Women’s International Polo Tournament 2026 amid fanfare and tradition. Nestled in Mapal Kangjeibung, this site stands as a living testament to Sagol Kangjei, the authentic precursor to contemporary polo.
During the All Manipur Polo Association’s flag-raising rite, Bhalla proclaimed Manipur the genuine hearth of polo’s vibrant legacy, an inseparable thread in the state’s identity. He advocated balanced growth: boosting the sport while prioritizing Manipuri pony health, pasture preservation, and restoration of time-honored grounds.
The Governor lauded the event’s role in women’s upliftment, channeling sport’s power to build poise, guidance, and peak performance. Esteemed guests like First Lady Jyoti Bhalla, Additional Chief Secretary Vivek Kumar Dewangan, Inspector General Major General Ravirup Singh of Assam Rifles (South), and AMPA head Konsam Sharat Chandra Singh attended.
Spanning six days, the competition pits South Africa, Zambia, India A (IPA), and Manipur’s India B in high-stakes matches. It echoes the 15th International Polo Tournament of the Sangai Festival 2025 at the same hallowed turf, featuring USA, Colombia, and Indian teams post a two-year ethnic violence pause.
Revived with gubernatorial zeal, the festival polo showcased America’s, Colombia’s, and domestic prowess, as noted by organizers. This women’s tournament amplifies that momentum, drawing global eyes to Manipur’s equine excellence.
Beyond the scoreboard, it weaves narratives of cultural continuity and gender progress. As riders charge forward, they carry Manipur’s indomitable spirit, proving that even after turmoil, tradition gallops on unbroken.
