Delhi’s law enforcers delivered a body blow to mobile thieves, exposing an interstate racket preying on shoppers. South-West police arrested 27-year-old Abhishek Kumar alias Shubham and caught a minor helper, confiscating 46 stolen smartphones, 13 of them iPhones, now back with owners.
Triggering the probe was a December 27 e-FIR from Sarojini Nagar market. Footage showed suspects circling the victim. On December 28, intel guided SI Anoop Kumar and HC Rajendra to detain the 15-year-old at Gate 2.
Grilled by police, the boy owned up to bazaar heists, fingering Shubham as his fence. Under SHO Atul Tyagi and ACP Safdarjung Enclave, a raid on the East Delhi hideout yielded Shubham’s arrest and 34 phones with covers.
IMEI surveillance and CEIR data pinpointed 12 more recoveries. Verified and documented, the full haul of 46 was handed over at Sarojini Nagar.
Winter markets were prime hunting grounds; thieves used plastic sheets for covert grabs into coats, funneling loot to Shubham for shadowy shipments abroad via Nepal and Bangladesh routes.
Ten e-FIRs closed across stations including Krishna Nagar, Jamia Nagar, Timarpur, and more; 37 tied to lost reports.
South-West Delhi Police celebrated the tech-fueled triumph as a model of professional sleuthing and public service, pledging sustained vigilance.
